Hi, Kelly. I did not post because I felt that there
were others on the board with much more experience
than I, but I did take an objective look at the
situation.
Without knowing what type of litter you were using,
perhaps the vet chose to be aggressive and use
astro-turf as it has no irritating oil, can be
disinfected, and is fairly inexpensive. He/she may
have done this to prevent another gerbil from getting
an airborne disease AND/OR to prevent it from getting
a bedding related allegic respiratory response that
could/would go into a serious respiratory illness.
I would think my gerbils would chew on it and make a
lovely green nest. . .
Secondly, there are no guarantees that your little guy
will accept another cage mate. So you will have to
tread carefully for two reasons: (1) to protect both
the gerbils being introduced; and, (2) to be sure you
can tend to two separate tanks in the event they do
not accept each other. At his/her age, and with having
had previous difficulty introducing another partner, I
would tend to think you shouldn't try.
These are just opinions and guesses. Good luck!
Namaste
Cynthia
