So far everyone has posted how to prevent longs nails, but I have a
suggestion how to take care of your problem with the nails being too long
already.

Carefully wrap the gerbil in a cloth with only the head sticking out along
with one paw at a time. Maybe this might help to keep the gerbil from
struggling so much while you clip.
