I just made a quick app with an editfield and a pushbutton. I
defined a CheckPage method like this:

Sub CheckPage(url As String)
  Dim ttt As new HTTPSocket
  EditField1.Text = ttt.Get(url, 3)
End Sub

The PushButton1.Action method just says

  CheckPage "http://freefl.free.fr/presentvu.htm";

When I click the button, the HTML for presentvu.htm comes up
right away. On my system, at least, ttt.Get works just fine with
string variables. I have no idea how to make a system behave the
way yours is behaving.

Try making just a simple test app like I did. If it still fails,
I'd trash the REALbasic preferences file, and re-install RB. If
the test app works, though, I'd suspect a corrupted project file.
Maybe if you save the project as XML and then re-load it?
Sometimes that helps.
