Hi everyone,

I just got home from LensCrafters with my fancy new $443 glasses; the
bad news is, I can't see properly out of them, for multiple reasons. I
normally wear contacts, and the glasses are for "backup" but need to
be good enough for wearing multiple days per week to rest my eyes from
the contacts.

So, I did the research that I should have done before I went to
LensCrafters, and it seems maybe I got screwed (but I can back out
with a 100% refund within 30 days). I think that online glasses might
be for me, so this post is to help me figure out what to do next.

I also have a pair of old glasses, which I believe were also purchased
at a chain and have basic plastic lenses (I assume CR-39) with no anti-
reflective coating. I'd like to replace these.

My prescription is -2.50 plus cyl -0.75 70 in one eye and -4.25 plus
cyl -0.25 180 in the other.

What I like about my old glasses:

* Very little chromatic abberation (color fringing).
* Consistent correction across the frame -- it's sharp all the way to
the edge of the lens.

What I don't like about my old glasses:

* Distortion is bothersome at times.
* They give me a headache after several hours of wear.

What I like about the new glasses:

* Less distortion than the old ones.
* Sharper than the old ones, when they're sharp.

What I don't like about the new glasses (Featherwate Complete
polycarbonate)

* They're only sharp at near/middle distances.
* Heavy chromatic abberation -- e.g., it's distracting for reading.
Only in the very center of the frame is there no visible abberation.
* Correction is very inconsistent across the frame -- only in the very
center is it really sharp.

So, they're going back.

The online research seems to indicate that what I want is very basic:
CR-39 lenses, low refractive index, with anti-reflective coating.
Where can I get this? And how do I know what I'm getting?

Of the vendors mentioned on the blog, 39dollareyeglasses smells the
best to me, but they don't seem to offer plain single-vision CR-39,
just in sunglasses or bifocals. Goggles4u offers CR-39 but in a
refractive index of 1.56, which seems to have an Abbe number not much
better than polycarbonate.

Sorry about the length. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Reid
