There are probably (lots of) people who won't use a mailing list or IRC no matter what. For those people a forum is the difference between getting no help and being a (happy) user.
I offered phpBB because it's what I know. I will continue to evaluate it and see if it would be suitable to our needs. I will see if it can addreess peoples concerns.
If you could get some kind of integration working between mailing list and forum then it would have a good chance of succeeding, I think. Keep us updated.
