Greetings,

 Hi! :)

Regarding the announcements, has it been decided that an issue 10
days, 7 days, and 1 day before the event is more effective than 7 days
and 1 day? If every gnhLUG event gives 3 announcements, might it start
to border on spam and get ignored.

I agree that over-announcing is a Bad Thing(TM). My basic theory on
publicity for this sort of thing is:

 (1) Get the word out as soon as we know.

(1.1) If needed, get a preliminary announcement out first, and fill
in details later.

 (2) Provide a reliable, central place to check, so if people miss an
announcement, or details need to be filled in, people can find out.
(This is nicely fulfilled by the web site, with links to the
announcement archives.)

 (3) Follow up with reminders so people don't forget, but don't over do-it.

The reason for item 1 is that some people apparently plan their
schedule weeks or even months in advance. I don't really understand
that, myself, but we should try to accommodate them. This also allows
more time for word-of-mouth and such to build momentum.

The reason for item 1.1 is to enable 1 for the non-uncommon case
where we don't know all the details, but we do know the general topic.

The reason I sent out the announcement when I did was because the
event was reportedly still unannounced. I wanted to fulfill item 1.

Remember, if we don't announce it, *nobody knows about it*. It
doesn't matter how much we talk about it here on -org, or run through
plans in our mind, or edit that draft of the announcement. All that
work has *zero value* until published. I'm as guilty as anyone on
this, which is why I harp on about it -- I've got experience. :)

As far as the ideal time schedule for announcements, I would suggest
sending one as soon as possible, and one shortly before the event (the
day before to a few days before, inclusive). In other words, pretty
much exactly what you've been doing, Jim. :)

The only thing I might suggest would be that, if we do have the
announcement ready earlier than "T minus 14 days", we should send it
out right then. Why wait?

In the unlikely event that we actually announce more than a month in
advance, we might also send an announcement at about one month prior.
;-)

As far as my email problem, any suggestions are appreciated, but
that thread should be moved to "discuss" or Ben-the-Enforcer will get
crabby - which is very much out of character for him.

 :-p

For the record: As usual, all the meta-discussion died out in a day
or so, with the only clear outcome being "no consensus". So we still
have no charter for gnhlug-discuss, which means no topic police.
Which means I'm not Ben-the-Enforcer for anything other than "Don't
discuss illegal stuff on a server I'm legally responsible for". :-)
