If you have some free space on you box then try redhat 6.2 at work.
redhat 6.2 allows you to put linux in a directory (partition less)
We installed this on a laptop in shot time and the results were great.
This is a low impact solution for any windows prisoner
you will have to use a boot floppy though (not such a big deal)
