I recently talked to a school administrator about issues surrounding
filtering software which is a hot topic with them due to a recent NH
case and the new federal law. During the convesation, he mentioned they
had one box running Linux and the rest NT with the intention of turning
the Linux box into NT soon. I asked about cost, etc. and the answer was
a little suprising. He said cost was not an issue for NT since the
software from MS could be obtained for little cost and it was easy to
obtain MS certified people. On the other hand Linux knowledgeable
people were hard to find, more expensive, and he thought it would be
hard for the current staff to learn Linux. Seems a project for GNHLUG
or someone would be to provide educational and non-profit groups with
suffieient training to get them on their feet using Linux. Anyone
interested? I assume a cost-benefit case can be made for Linux as
opposed to NT if the staffing issue is resolved.
