I assume you mean potato (the current Debian release):  KDE is an issue on it 
due to the QTL licensing on the old QT (fixed in the newer woody).  My 
recommendation would be to use Storm for the initial install, or download / 
cut the Progeny beta.  Both have much better installers than stock debian 
(although debian is installable by mere mortals, I managed, so it can't be too 
hard ;-).

If you're looking to set up X for users, use either gdm or kdm for the login, 
and the user can choose their environment at login time.  Make certain both 
the GNOME & KDE environments are installed (one nice thing about Linux - I run 
KDE apps under GNOME, and you can do the reverse, as long as you have the 
libraries installed).
