Are you certain it is the fans? Maybe send us a .au file if you have
a soundboard and mic nearby ;-)

Once in a blue moon I have seen a computer that would make a "fuzz"
type sound with the cache (I'm supposing, maybe cpu) was accessed...

Did you say whether you knew your fan(s) are controllable (e.g.
temperature controllable).

BTW, if by "*lower* pitch" you mean the fan is spinning more slowly, why
doesn't that correlate with Bill Freeman's hypothesis?
(i.e. seti off => cpu not so hot => fan spins more slowly)
