It is probably not a packet filtering firewall, but some sort of
application level firewall.  E.g. No IP packet routing takes place;
ssh works via socks.  Or similar application proxying software...

If so, then presumably one could create one's own socksified (or
whatever is being used) HTTP proxy...   Still, the ssh home redir might
have better performance since it does not have to reestablish the
connection thru the proxy firewall each HTTP request.  It all depends.

I'm just guessing here; I've never worked for Compaq or been inside (or DEC).
Could be something rather different.
