   These programs read/write the UDF filesystem.  Adaptec's DirectCD might 
have been the first program to do this.  They'll work with regular CDR's 
as well, but you can only add files and never delete.
   The problem is that you end up with a disc that may or may not work in
any other system.  I'm not positive that all of these programs work the
same way, and UDF is not yet widely supported.  Linux has UDF support, but
it's experimental (what isn't?) and write support is labeled "Dangerous".

   Don't forget HP.  They have a drive available in every consumer 
electronics store for <$600.  I believe it does CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, and 
DVD+RW.
