At some point hitherto, Rodent of Unusual Size hath spake thusly:

> 1. Is there any way to get access to the console through the
> serial port?

Absolutely.

  <kernel source tree>/Documentation/serial-console.txt

This file contains all the details of everything that everyone else
has mentioned in this thread, all in a nice one-stop-shopping kind of
package.

> 2. Provided I can get in, is there any way I can *crash* the
> system so I can take a look at a dump to figure out WIH was

Absolutely.

BTW, for those who care about such things: ALL of the software on the
above web server is GPL'd open-source code. MCL is dead, but the new
company that replaced it still has this site up. It might not be so
bad to have this stuff mirrored somewhere, in the event that they take
it down (or themselves go out of business). The stuff that's there
*can* be quite handy, as I learned from first hand experience. If no
one is interested in mirroring it, I may create sourceforge projects
for them...
