I too was put off by this initially. But, as was mentioned. give it a try and you may find you don't need it. I typically have a dozen applications going for work and I have adapted quite quickly. Took me about 4 days. That being said, I think it would be crazy not to have a good taskbar extension with nice, smooth integration (perhaps from somebody other than the core shell team) in future versions--I get why it's not there but that doesn't mean people don't want it and perhaps need it.
