A statically linked executable is a collective work comprising its components, constructed by a program called a linker which combines the components into a single file by extracting portions of them and modifying internal references within them. In no way is the result a verbatim copy of the source code of its components. Because the linker operates mechanically, the resulting file is not a derivative work of its components. It is simply a modified version of them, and in order to copy and distribute it, permission from the rights owners of the components must be obtained.
