The only problem was that I wanted to use plotutils directly (via the
library), without having to call the "graph" sub-process. However, I
soon realized that the graphing functionality wasn't available in a
library, just the lower level drawing routines, and then I got
side-tracked.

The upstream author has told me that a libgraph is coming, but it's
not ready yet. Plotutils is nice, and libplot some pretty powerful
drawing primitives, much more powerful that plain old X, including
arbitrary affine transformations, rotations, translations, skews,
etc. and it can render all of these to a number of formats, including
directly to an X window drawable, and to postscript. I (barely)
started in on writing pie chart routine in libplot (it's in one of our
source files), but never got back to it.

Plotutils also has the nice feature of being covered under the (L)GPL,
unlike gnuplot, which despite it's name, has a slightly strange
(though still free) license.

Looking at things now, it's not clear what the best way to proceed is.
I think one of the first orders of business is to take a hard look at
what can be done with the canvas and gnome-print before expending a
lot of effort.
