Though the literal meaning is Stranded or Aground, applied here it would be Island, as in the Island of Bombay (Varado do Bombaim). At a point in time, until a wealthy and kindly Parsi merchant-aristocrat paid for road connections to be built from the coastal mainland to Bombay, the latter was an island surrounded by local waterways (rivers) that fed into the local sea, the Indian Ocean.
