Cornel Dacosta asks: why so many Goans want to love Goa, quite a lot, but from
afar!

My short response to Cornel, is: "Because Goans know they cannot do not do much
from afar."

If a Diaspora Goan truly loves Goa, they could duplicate its practices and
customs in their adopted land; and know the history and geography of Goa. There
is nothing new here. It is done by most ethnic groups (European and Indian)
that have immigrated to Canada and USA. I do not mean the minimum once a year
social event called "Goa Day".

Most ethnic groups in the USA have in each town a club house, (or temple or
mosque). Here with weekly meetings and monthly events they reinforce their near
and extended family bonds, continue their community practices (language, song,
dance, religious rituals) and pass down a value system and traditions they
themselves learnt and practiced.

As I see from the many Goanet postings, those 'in love with Goa', run away from
its traditions, if not condemn it as being outdated. Some plain-speaking
practice casteism, by presenting themselves as some 'progressive, ...
intellectual, ... busy' Goans who have / seek to discard their goaness in their
new community. While a few keep other Goans out of their closed-knit social
group.

Kind Regards, GL

The longest time I have spent in Goa is four months. Yet I love the place and
claim to be Goan too.
