The topic was whether the late Fr. Antonio Pereira sj had really changed his mind as regards the script for Official Language Konkani and, if so, the proof in that regard. Having failed miserably to provide the proof for your assertion, you are now trying to divert the attention of Goanetters towards the topic of GULAB, the Konkani monthly magazine. Comment: Et tu, Brute? Unlike Shakespeare's Brutus, I thought you would honourably name the "Pirate" priest as requested by Dr. Jose Colaco and me. The subject line is about that issue, is it not?? How could you miss it! For a man not "intimately connected" with GOENCHO ULO, you have skewed the data thereon to your liking and imagination. Thank you for the generosity of stating that the tabloid was a fortnightly. It was NOT planned to be. The very first issue was for the months of November-December, 2005. It was decided to have two issues in December, 2005, so the month of December had three issues in all! January, 2006 had one issue and it went back to being a bimonthly in February, 2006. The GOENCHO ULO, to the best of my knowledge had made NO commitments regarding its frequency or continuity. It was a FREE to the reader publication, unlike the newspapers and magazines which have advance paid subscribers. THEREIN LIES THE DIFFERENCE. Do not imagine that the GOENCHO ULO had got lots of funds from NRI Goans. It did not. Just one NRI Goan sent us money from himself and a few friends who had given money to him. The entire money has been utilised for the cause it was given. That is one aspect that I personally verified. The transactions are by cheque and DD ..and externally audited. What you imagine is far from the truth. The GOENCHO ULO achieved its objective of generating interest in Konkani readers for POSITIVE news and views. A new platform is available to readers and writers in JIVIT. As you will, perhaps be aware I am not a regular reader or writer of Konkani. Konkani is my mother tongue. As for most Goans, it is a SPOKEN language for me. You can call it a dialect [i.e.spoken language] if you do not subscribe to Dr.Tanaji Halarnkar's ridiculous hypothesis on "Aspects" of a language. Unlike many, I am upfront. I have been associated with the GOENCHO ULO and I am as proud of it as I am of my association with the Goa Bachao Abhiyan or the SEZ Virudhi Manch now. If Goa does not survive as a State, which Konkani will become the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of which SEZ do you think, Sebastiao bab? Perhaps Antruzi in Devanagri script for Cipla's Meditabs Specialities Ltd at keri Ponda, Saxtti in Modi script for K Raheja's Mindspace at Verna-Loutolim and Bardezi in Roman script for Salgaocar's proposed SEZ in Serula. In Sancoale, it is already Anda Gunda Thanda Pani ;-) That's Biotech for you. I know Fr. Freddy's history and I knew him personally, too, but more as a printer at New Age Printers and as a tiatrist priest. Heard that he was the President of the Dalgado Konkani Academy [DKA] in the not too distant past. At least Michael Gracias acknowledges Fr. Freddy as his guru in Konkani. God bless his soul. You wrote : "the periodicity of GULAB is being reduced from MONTHLY to QUARTERLY. And he has given the readers sufficient advance notice of the things to come." Comment: That means those who have paid for one year's monthly subscription can now look forward to THREE years of Romi GULAB, with Nagri kantte and all, now that it has become a quarterly. That would be the commitment under consumer rights, since it is a PAID issue. I hope there are no FIVE years' monthly subscriptions! Please tell us the name of the PIRATE PRIEST. Please. Or like Fr. Antonio Pereira's turn around from suporting Devanagri script,we may forever have no record. No one grows younger these days ...and life is always unpredictable. As you have rightly stated death can occur anywhere between the womb and the tomb. Mog asundi. I thought that I ask you about GULAB. A few years ago, I organised to have some issues air-mailed to me. My reaction after reading one issue: Do these jokers really expect people to spend money to buy this junk?>> I need not stress on the undeniable fact that one cannot live on publishing Konkani magazines; an avocation is essential to earn one's bread. Fausto too has his business. But the constant physical and mental strain has taken a toll of his health. Therefore, having helped realize his brother's dream, he has decided to rest on his oars ? the periodicity of GULAB is being reduced from MONTHLY to QUARTERLY. And he has given the readers sufficient advance notice of the things to come. Therefore, where is the basis for your stating that "they" are losing their voice? Now, let me see you exercise your grey cells. Exactly two years ago, GOENCHO ULO was published as a fortnightly. The avowed bases for the publication were: (1) There is a huge readership (over 50,000) hungrily awaiting a daily in Konkani in the Roman Script (KRS). Thus a print order of 10,000 would be just modest. (2) Only the first three issues would need capital funding; after that the advertisement revenues would not only pay for its upkeep but also generate sufficient funds to eventually convert it into a daily. Believing in these tall claims, many Non Resident Goans (NRG) came forward with bountiful contributions. But the periodical maintained its fortnightly periodicity just for three issues and did not survive for a total of six months. Considering these facts, let me ask you a few questions. (1) What was the projected longevity of GOENCHO ULO, considering the greater interest in KRS literature? Was it realized? (2) Of what ailment did it die? Even an infant born with the AIDS virus (which you have diagnosed GULAB to suffer from) survives for more than six months; so what was the cause of this infant demise? Congenital defect? Slipshod obstetrics / midwifery? Irresponsible parenting? Malnutrition? Starvation? Did the nurses drink the milk instead? .....? Lest some reader get the impression that I am asking these questions of a rank outsider, let me clarify that you, Miguelbab, were intimately associated with GOENCHO ULO, the intimacy being much greater than mine with GULAB. You are, of course, free to deny such association. Sotachench Zoit Zatolem. Mog asum. Sebastian Borges -- -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
