okay, mystery solved. Keith was using the Disconnect chrome extension. This extension was blocking the entire apis.google.com domain, which host the google javascript client library [1]. It's used by a bunch of product to access our APIs from the browser - from +1 buttons, to the Monitoring graphs shown in the Developers Console.
