Updates are really re-writes so you pretty much have to resend an entire item to change one value. If all your items have the same symptom, I'm afraid you will have to resubmit your entire feed.
However, I'm confused about how you would be modifying g:id. Your sent-item would have g:id set and it would either over-write the existing version of the item at googlebase or create a new entry.
