i believe you get one chance and one chance only
to insert a g:id alias for the atom:id --
this is a name-space related restriction.

the error should be generated if an attempt is made to update
an item by using an existing atom:id plus a g:id alias when
there's no existing g:id alias -- as if inserting anew.

there's no error generated if an attempt is made to update
an item by using an existing atom:id without using a g:id
alias -- or when using an existing g:id -- then yes, the
existing item will be overwritten -- missing attributes
are considered deletions.
