My initial idea was to have a list as dashes and a tree as parallel
lines but
Your suggestion might be better.
The tree is a more complex line as is the data.

I feel the example tree is visually too complex....
The rectangular blocks are visually too strong IMO.
They create too much visual noise.

some suggestions:
What about leaving out the perpendicular closing lines.
making it a double dashed line with less open space.

How about more of a relation between the types:

1 line single value
______________

1 dashed line = list
___ ___ ___ ___ ___

double (parallel) dashed line = tree.
___ ___ ___ ___ ___
___ ___ ___ ___ ___


Or

____________________

BTW empty list is perfect :-)
