Apologies for the delay in replying: I now can't get into my Linux system!!
If and when I do, I'll probably start again from scratch. I deleted all the
-gretl- folders before I logged off last night.

But (according to your logs) you reconfigured with --prefix=/usr and

/usr/bin/gretl

As it happens, you should find gretlcli there, but not the GUI
program, gretl_x11. The config.log shows that gtk+-2.0 was not
found, so the GUI would not get built.

You need to install the GTK devel package

   sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev

Please read Appendix C.2 to the Gretl User's Guide, "Build
instructions: a step-by-step guide".
