None of the developers knew much about autoconf or automake. It was just enough to get the whole stuff work more or less and to add the occasional check and parameter, mostly by copy/pasteing the config code from other packages. Except for whatnot reasons there might be, there is a simple reason why Raphael switched to metaconfig. He knew how to make it work and no other developer could offer an alternative or make the autostuff work. Since nobody had the time or leisure to learn autostuff, that was it. Btw.: I'm not too happy with metaconfig either, but that what it is now. Since I don't have time to contribute anything at the moment and in the forseeable future, my vote what tools to use is void anyway. Actually I wonder... if you are so fond of autostuff and are able to make it work... can't you simply create autostuff stuff and have that put into cvs in parallel to the metaconfig stuff? That would make it possible for everybody to use the building system of his/her choice.
