A couple of comments:

* The HH series isn't what I'd call hard SF. I've seen it called a 'navy
procedural' in analogy to 'police procedural' novels - it concentrates
both on heavy doses of technobabble and lots of wardroom interaction,
as opposed to pure battle scenes.

* I believe the series took a steep climb downhill as the books got
longer, more political and more preaching. The first couple were
great, then newer stuff is merely good :-)

* If you want good books with fleet combat or capital ships, consider:
  - Excession by Iain M. Banks. Not very hard and arguably the battles
are just a sideline, but I really liked it.
  - Hellburner and Downbelow Station by C.J. Cherryh. Downbelow Station
is set 30 years after Hellburner, but it was written earlier and it
can be read first. Hellburner is the sequel to Heavy Time, which is
not very 'naval' but should be read before Hellburner. Heavy Time
and Hellburner have been re-published as Devil to the Belt.
