Here come three sailing craft for Traveller.

The first is a TL6 ship from a backwater region of a TL8 world in the
TL9 Federation of Arden. She has three separate navigation systems of
of different types -- basic TL6 compass/sextant/chronometer/maps, TL9
GPS (dependent on sats) and TL9 transponder/radio (dependent on nav
fixes from the starport). Obviously calling the starport is the last
resort, but TL9 GPS should give the right position if it gives any
position at all, unless deliberately distorted.

The second is a TL5 boat from a typical region of a TL5 world in the
TL12 Imperium. Her instruments are TL8 'export' variants, especially
designed for backwater worlds. Again navigation instruments, GPS and
radio, but no transponder so getting a fix from the starport would
be difficult. In familiar areas, the sonar gives a +1 nav bonus.

The last is last weeks' TL5 ship from an interdicted TL5 world. No
imports ...

Also notable is the fact that both schooners have an exceptional range
for a modern ship of their size. When a few million people spread over
a world, some settlements may be widely scattered. I know that age of
exploration (TL4) ships did even better, but those took substantial
risks and routinely lost crewmembers.

Schooner Princess Iphegenia v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6-9)
  Copyright 2006 by Onno Meyer

On planets with large oceans, watercraft are a low-tech alternative to
contragrav aircraft. The Princess Iphegenia is a good example. She has a
steel hull, a relatively modern schooner rig, an auxiliary diesel engine
and imported electronics.
The schooner can carry twenty displacement tons of breakbulk cargo and
ten passengers. Her normal crew are the master, the first mate, six deck
hands, a mechanic and a cook.
The stern of the ship holds the captain's stateroom and five passenger
cabins. Three bunkrooms (with two, four and six bunks) are placed in the
bow. The mate gets the double bunkroom, which leaves two empty berths in
the crew quarters. The deck house contains the chart room and the galley
and dining area.
At a routine travel speed of 5 knots, the main engine uses 4 gallons
of diesel per hour. The diesel generator burns 0.4 gallons per hour. A
full load of fuel and provisions is $6,720.
The Princess Iphegenia costs Cr7,760 in Imperial Credits or $155,200
at TL6 prices.

Fishing Boat GF308 "Marian II" v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL 5-8)
    Copyright 2000 by Onno Meyer

The "Marian II" is a fishing boat on Dinomn, a backwater world in the
Lanth subsector. Since the owner couldn't afford to import an engine, the
boat is powered by sails and oars. It has an open cockpit and work area, a
compartment with two bunks in the bow and a small cargo hold in the bilge.
Recently the owner could afford modern navigation instruments, a radio and
a fishfinder, powered by a battery and a solar cell array over the cabin.
The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles [second edition, first printing, June
99 errata] as modified by GURPS Traveller. The hull is manufactured at TL
    5, instruments are TL 8.

Kargash-class 100-ton Patrol Schooner v0.1 (GURPS Traveller TL5)
  Copyright 2008 by Onno Meyer

During the Long Night, the planet Sonthert lost most technology. Some
historical knowledge was retained, which explains why the standard long
range vessel was named after an Interstellar Wars era cruiser class.
The schooner has two masts with bermuda and jib sails. Her sleek hull
is heavily reinforced to weather storms far from home and copper-plated
to reduce fouling. She has room for about 25 crew, 75 passengers and 40
displacement tons of cargo. The schooner has no engines, but a battery
powers a few electric lights, tools and instruments. She has gun ports
for a few small muzzleloaders, but usually no weapons are carried.
The listed payload includes two pinnaces, 200 stons of cargo, and 36
stons of provisions. The food is $36,000 and lasts for two months.

Subassemblies: Body +8, two Masts +3.
Powertrain: 12,000-sf Bermuda-and-Jib rig; 1-kW muscle engine; 1,250-kWs
  lead-acid battery.
Occ: 5 RCS, 96 hammocks, 2 cabins. Cargo: 20,000 cf.

standard wood, covered by DR 1 expensive metal on body F, R, L, B, U.
Waterproofed. Primitive controls. 450.271 cf of empty space. Empty

(armor volume) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller
background affects the design decisions, not the technology.
