We currently have an airplane that can taxi, take off, and land
without human help and with full air traffic but we make people do it
because it is hard to sell load of passengers a ticket without having
a human captain flying it. I read something many years ago about a
flight that they did from CA USA to Australia and the only command
radioed to the airplane was to fly a hold pattern because the air port
was full.

Well, *routine* operations can be automated for us, but there are still mid-flight emergencies which auto-pilot only planes can't handle. Like hydraulic failure (thus having to steer by engine manipulation), or ditching, or crash-landing.
