I don't like the toothpick so much because they can break or splinter.
On the other hand, I know what you mean about metal and electronics.
Since the button is plastic in this case, that's probably not an issue.

 Denise had to use something like a pin, or safety pin. The stylus didn't
 work. My wife is unsure if she even felt a give or not. In the end it
 rebooted itself but it was kind of a surpise.
 Activating that button may just be a matter of practice.
