Here is the solution supplied by a couple of people off-list. I tested
it; and, of course, it works like a charm.
Begin by making certain that you have Window-Eyes
in advanced mode, which can be done by going to Window-Eyes, pressing alt-h
and V.
Next, find the desired symbol with your mouse pointer.
Press control-shift-e, which will highlight the character and open the WE
dictionary node. Right-arrow and down-arrow to character dictionary.
Tab to the original edit box and left arrow to make sure you have the
correct symbol. Tab once and press the delete key. Tab twice and uncheck
the box. Tab to update and press enter. Before you save your change,
alt-tab back to your document and make sure it did what you wanted it to.
If it worked, alt-tab to WE and press control-s.
If it did not, press
esscape and don't save the change
Repeat as required; and, if you get the speech as you like it, make
certain your finalized changes are saved.
