In a perfect world you would be correct, but it still boils down to the software that you use on that computer. If the people that write the 3rd party software on that computer don't use the standards for writing that software, than you're still out of luck and that software will need to have something inconjunction with that built in screen reader to make it work. What garantee do you have that the company that makes the OS will always put the effort in to making the screen reader as good as it should be? What if they update the OS and don't put an updated screenreader in that OS for 3 months and some things don't work anymore?
Does all the software written for the Mac work on the Mac?
Last I heard, Logic Pro didn't and I think it's owned by Apple. I hope they take care of that situation. for a long time Pro Tools didn't work for blind people either. One is made by Apple and Pro Tools is not.

I think if you could take the Apple approach, that would make it a lot better. With the mac, you're only paying $600-$2500 depending on the computer you get from Apple, but the screen reader comes free with the OS. But then again, we have things like ms narrator that are free with the OS, but are total crap.

Some people seem to think that you should be able to by a $600 piece of software that will work with any piece of software you put in it's way. and that it's the screen reader company's obligation to make it so. It's not possible nonbelievers. It's the responsability of the original writers of the software to write it so that it will work with screen readers. There are standards. and if Software designers followed them we probably wouldn't need to have this discussion. ----- Just because I own a house doesn't mean I don't have to pay for upgrades in the wiring plumbing etc.

Because until companies make their software accessible, out of the box, it takes lots of work to get some of them working. Plus I don't think a screen reader company has the resources to make all programs work with their product. It's not possible without lots of work. It's not, GW Micro's fault that everything doesn't work. Their job is to provide a screen reader that works well with many types of the more popular or most used programs.
The microsoft products, for instance.
Anything else is really gravy.
We aren't entitled to get everything free. All this is just my opinion of course and not intended to start a war. <grin>

Well we can't expect to always get apps for nothing. for instance $10 or $20
doesn't seem unreal to me for many apps.
If it's total scrypting for a program it takes hours and hours. Like it or
not that money has to come from somewhere.

As for making Gw Connect chargeable, it could be something like $10 or
$20 and it would just remove the commercials and the boxes at the start
and/or the end of the program. It could be a one time fee.

For Window-Eyes users it is a really nice gift, but I think that GW
Micro can ask a small amount of money for it and other users will buy
itso they don't get the commercials. Or Only a message when it is
starting orso.

A good app I know is Polyglot. Usefull. The virtual windows app is
also usefull.
