It should happen, but doesn't always seem to. I've got a USB 2.0 hub that is
on its way out that will only act as a USB 1.1 hub. I always get the message
when plugging any devices to it, but even though Windows is supposed to
always give this message, I never get one when plugging a USB 3.0 device
into one of the USB 2.0 ports, so this one seems to be a YMMV issue as far
as using it to determine which ports are 3.0.
Regards,
chris

Well, the one time I put a usb3 drive enclosure into the wrong slot, I
got a message telling me it could be faster in an usb3 slot, but I don't
know if that will happen to you.

Can you hurt your device if you plug it into the wrong slot? I thought
one of my slots didn't allow my keyboard USB to go in as easily, so I
figured it was somehow different, but now I wonder if I've stuck flash
drives or peripherals in the wrong holes.

You will need sighted help -- they are usually a different color or
something, or maybe the manual for the mb will say.
