I'm wondering if staking it out on the grass for a week under our
blistering summer sun would do it.... or if I'd just get mildew and bugs.

That would work in theory -- but not staked on the grass. If you elevated it
above the ground you would avoid the bugs and mildew. However, you couldn't
guarantee that the piece would fade evenly, or that it would fade into a
color you liked. It wouldn't necessarily just be lighter, it might go
slightly green or purple or grey or ??? depending on the original dye.
