Which is why I really loved Janet Wilson Anderson's veiled comments in her catalog (Raiments). While I can't remember the exact words, they were always positive sounding versions of "recommended," but in varying degrees; you could _tell_ which makers to avoid if you paid attention to her system.

I well remember trying to fit a pattern for Cin in which the notches from piece to piece were not at all related, the entire shoulder piece was backwards, and another piece missing. We were indeed working with a muslin and by the time it was over she had her outfit-- no thanks to the pattern company.

And a pattern I once bought to save time (this one was 'old world') ended up _costing_ me time. I had to redraft the entire thing and have Cin fit it. Fortunately for me I had a helper (Cin) with experienced hands :) It cost me many days of prep, but the final product was worth it: a dark green bicycling bodice, 1895, to wear with a divided skirt I drafted from a book.
