Doug Cutting commented on HADOOP-1066:
--------------------------------------

This looks good to me. It would be better if a few more of the links in the
"Getting Started" and "Getting Involved" section pointed to pages in the
website, rather than directly to the wiki or to Jira. This will make the
documentation (which is included in releases) more standalone.

In particular:

We might either add an "install and configure" page to the site, or point to
the front page of the javadoc, which contains such information:

http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/api/overview-summary.html#overview_description

We should add a "download" page.

The "feedback" link should not point to jira, but rather to
http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/issue_tracking.html. That page should also
probably include advice about first searching the mail archives, asking
questions on the user list, and searching the bug database before filing a new
issue.

> http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/ front page is not user-friendly

> One of our tech writers has been looking at the state of Hadoop
> documentation, and suggests reworking the Hadoop front page to be more than
> just a release page (as it seems to be now).
> Especially in comparison with other other apache project pages, ours is
> uninviting to users unfamiliar with the premise of the project. She's
> suggesting updating the page to include more meta-information about the site,
> in addition to most of the links and news items currently on the page.
