Hi everyone, Thanks for all the prompt help. I followed one of the previous bits of advice by running
apt-get remove mplayer I can only assume that mplayer was causing the problem, as once this was removed the rest of the packages were processed properly. I have now reinstalled mplayer and it seems to be fine.
