Christopher,
I will print/read your share many more times.
Your logic is quite different than mine, BUT, I do understand.... :)
About the "owning" my modem. I suspect that I do; I am now paying $4/mo to TPC for the replacement they sent me last June/July.

Your plan seems to "protect" the output of the modem.
Whereas, I use a ups to protect the input to the modem. I will cogitate this now....... :) I have never broken the WAN cable between the modem and my router because I view this interface as pure "LAN" and no longer POTS! I suppose I wish to provide whatever protection I can provide to my modem during the next electrical storm. Electrical storms are why I own all the fancy ups' I own now!
Interesting.
Best,
Duncan

No you do not want the filter before the modem only on other items, phones, FAX, direct tv box, cable box, etc that plug into the phone line that is the dsl. All I meant was that electronicaly different ups may need a filter but not if it is before the modem.

I agree with this. One thing you pretty much want to do with a DSL modem is make sure you don't own it in case there is a power surge you can make them repair it.

Then go WALL -> DSL Modem -> Ethernet -> Ethernet Line protector (Like a APC UPS Ethernet surge supressor) -> Router.

Isolate the DSL modem outside your ethernet network (And make sure your router, switch, etc are all on UPS's for surge protection.

I see so many places that have APC 750's protecting all their PC's but then their DSL modem is plugged directly into their switch in the closet, effectively nullifying their protection.

Isolate your network as well as your power. Electricity travels over copper, cat5 is copper....

(I am actually guilty of this at home, I do *not* have a filter between my cable modem and my router, I will be fixing that soon though.)
