Possibly not true. I've seen both Thunderbird and Mulberry switch fonts part-way through when they've encountered unicode code-points which sent
them searching for a font which has an appropriate glyph.

I don't know about Mulberry but isn't Thunderbird part of the Mozilla suite, and thus imbued with web-browser hatefulness by definition?
