OK. I thought I understood what was going on, but now he's saying they're using n-tuples but maintaining fixed length strings rather than integers as the elements of the n-tuples *and* mapping them differently based on the size of the tuple?

That is not the behavior of a sound mind. It makes the PDP-11 EIS unit seem logical.
