I’ll leave it to the Heb-NACOers to advise as to the romanization of גידייוס. As for פרימיר בולומין, that’s “primer volumen,” i.e., volume 1 — or if there’s no diacritic above or apostrophe next to the letter ב I guess it ought to be romanized “bolumen.” A problem with Ladino romanization is that the vowel yod can be romanized either “i” or “e” (and vav, as either “o” or “u”) depending on context. There’s no authoritative Ladino dictionary, unfortunately. The most comprehensive one that I’m aware of is the Dictionnaire du judéo-espagnole, by Joseph Nehama (Madrid, 1977), and it is entirely in the Latin alphabet. David Bunis produced the excellent, academic-level A Dictionary of the Hebrew and Aramaic Elements in Modern Judezmo (Jerusalem, 1993) — but of course it does not include words like פרימיר בולומין. FWIW, I’m deriving NLI’s Hebrew record for this book (OCLC #233177838). I think it would be helpful to know who in our cataloging community has expertise in less common Hebraic script languages like Ladino and Judeo-Arabic. It used to be that Zachary Baker (now retired) was the expert in Ladino and Rachel Simon and Joan Biella (both retired) were the experts in Judeo-Arabic. If there are experts in some of the other Hebraic script languages besides those (i.e. Judeo-Tajik, Judeo-Persian, etc.), it would be great to know that as well! Thanks in advance for your help.
