Yes this is the linux list but there is nothing wrong in stating something
about windows here. Because the truth is HLDS runs better on windows.

All true...when you're a part of both lists sometimes I guess I should
actually look up to see where I'm posting to beyond the "who" that I'm
replying to. Sorry fellas. But X64 Windows does kick some tail on these
wafers. ;)

It's getting pretty close to the unlocking of the new Day of Defeat for
Source game. I would like to get my server up and running prior. Did I
miss the release of the Linux server? Does anyone know the steam
command line that will setup the dedicated server on Linux?

Thanks.

Well it is true... Its proven, and I have plenty of proof. Ive been thru
over 60 machines with windows, and all sorts of linux, had tons of people
configure the linux for me, and windows still ran better. I would rather go
windows, and most people say linux is better but the only reason they say
that is because their cheap and want to save $700 for lisences...

*sigh*

Linux does some things better, windows does other things better. People
use linux because generally it IS a better server OS. However, and this
goes for anything: There is no one single application/OS/pc
hardware/car/plane/toilet that does EVERYTHING better than everything else.

If you want to debate something, leave the stupid statements out and
keep it real please.

Well I use the following line to update my server:
./steam -command update -game "hl2mp" -dir . -username USERNAME -password
PASSWORD -remember_password -retry -verify_all

This seems to work fine for me, though a bit slow due to verifying all the
files.

Hope this helps

Subject: [hlds_linux] DoD:S quick install
Reply-To: hlds_linux@list.valvesoftware.com

Hi,
just wondering if the valve people would like to give a
heads up on a quick install when they release the DoD:S
server today or tomorrow:

I've been playing around with the steam update and worked
out the rather obvious of extracting the necessary Windows
game GCF files (using GCFScape) to the server directories
to avoid having to download their full contents a second
time - so most files are just verified OK rather than
downloaded - just the changes and server files not present
in the client are downloaded (works well and is quite easy
- only catch was with CS:S to lowercase all the filenames
- but that was an obviously simple script - I assume it
will be the same for DoD:S)

Anyway, the problem with DoD:S will be that my GCF file
is encrypted (pre-loaded and paid for already of course)
so I can't extract it to the server directory so I will
have to download the 627,000Kb of DoD:S GCF data a second
time

... there obviously must be a GCF creater in the SDK (but
I haven't looked), but if there is you could of course
reverse engineer most of the client GCF from the server
files - so once the server is released there really is no
reason that I can think of to not activate/allow the
decryption of the client DoD:S GCF ???

This, of course, would also mean that some game servers are
downloading a LOT less from steam and could make the setup
happen with less grief due to the lower load on the download
side of steam

Again, I've done it this just yesterday with CS:S (and dod)
and it works fine, so I know it does work as expected.

Sound like a good idea Valve?

-Cheers
