That book says: 

"LFS-6.0, LFS-6.1, or HLFS-0.1+, are the prerequisite for the host system. 
Other systems may work but are not supported. "

If a HLFS --> HLFS build don't work using the same commands than in a LFS --> 
HLFS build (except for the already pointed calls to sysctl in "6.2. Mounting 
Virtual Kernel File Systems"), then the book need be fixed to take account of 
that divergences.
