Hans, 1. Following is perhaps an over simplification of the situation
2. I am not addressing horn player in question, but where you find the best. Could it not be that there are fewer positions available than there are great horn players. One source list as 20 the number of top symphonies in the US. If those positions are filled might a really good player make the hard decision to give up music and seek another career? Of course, if spending time with a major orchestra is a key part to the development process, disregard the above. (Or in the words of that great commentator on American life, Emily Letella, "What?
