Scott, even Don Juan is not an easy blow, depending on the conductor. It would not have been "easy" with Carlos Kleiber, but it was easy with Sawallisch & Solti. But once we had a program:
Don Juan - Till - Heldenleben, outdoors, old theatre of Pompei, mid September, 35 C., dress rehearsal at 07:00 PM - all Don Juan, all Till, 50% of Heldenleben & beginning of Mastersinger Ouverture, half hour rest, concert at 09:00 PM. - but no assistant !!! Sawallisch conducting. This was the one time only, Sawallisch made me stand up after Heldenleben - during 22 years together. But what an artistical exciting time with enormous trust between orchestra and Sawallisch. We were even able to do Tristan after 1 1/2 years and no rehearsal & it was perfect. These times have gone forever. It was an artistically most demanding time, but full of inspiration and success.
