This thread is nothing more than an extention of a recent one about tuning our
horns in a group setting to a given pitch. I can summarize that last thread by
saying "If you have an ear, tuning is over-rated. If you don't, tuning is for
naught".
Regardless of the brand of horn we play, the key that horn is pitched in, the
wrap used, or any other variables we chose to throw in, we are all prisoners of
the harmonic series, and masters (if we choose to be) of our ear.
On my Lawson, the open Bb horn second space A is eminently useable (only
SLIGHTLY flat...a few cents, and easily lipped up, and therefore likewise the
thumb and 1st valve G below it.) I have no idea why this harmonic is so in tune
on my Lawson and not on my Conn 28D, but who cares? Every horn is different,
even those of the same brand and model. Recommendations by anyone to anyone
else, if you have an ear, are useless. If you are faced with a passage
technical, lyrical, or otherwise and others in the section have that same
passage in unison, you each may well finger it differently depending on your
ear, your horn, or your use of the lip and right hand. All that matters is what
is heard in the audience.
Again, if you have an ear, all is well. If you don't, all is for naught.
