I have posted this before, but now seems like a good time to speak about the
first horn in the San Antonio Symphony George Yaeger.    That was a very long
time ago, but I still remember his sound.  And a few years back I acquired his
Alex.

George... some might still remember him... played on a five valve single Bb
Alex, and his sound was the most beautiful and warmest sound that I have ever
heard.  The closest I can come to comparing it to another horn sound would be
the Vienna horn sound.  Another quirk of George was that he used almost no hand
in the bell.

So I really think that the sound you get on "any" horn is your inner concept of
the sound you are striving for.  Our Assoc first horn here, Duane Saetveit,
sounds the same no matter what horn he is using.  His principal horn is a 8d,
but he also has a Paxman?? Bb high F.  The sound that comes out of the bell is
the same on both horns.  The Paxman is more compact, but the quality is the
same.

I think if Duane was playing on a "hosepipe" he would get the same sound.  So
Ken is correct!:  Play on the horn that you sound best on.  And yes, we do
listen more with our eyes that with our ears.  Well at least Conductors do
that, don't they??? !!!
