Actually, no less than the late Dick Merewether from Paxman told me that he
always preferred to pack fixed bell horns and the cases separately! (This
was in the days before readily available bubble wrap!). He always maintained
that fixed bell horns were desperately vulnerable to damage in transit.

You are correct though in stressing the importance of filling all empty
spaces in the case, so that the horn cannot move if it is bumped. This
applies to both fixed and detachable bell horns. The other thing is to
support the valve section so that a shock to the case will not bend the rest
of the tubing. The valve section is by far the heaviest part of the
structure, and needs to be supported firmly in the case. Some styrofoam
blocks will help here.

Otherwise your advice is right on the money!

Cheers,
