You raise an interesting question. Single horns can be gotten from eBay really
cheaply. One of the brand new Chinese horns would probably make a satisfying
candidate. On the other hand, some of the low priced horns on ebay are still
very good instruments. I started a project to convert my King Bb Schmidt copy
to five valves rather than rebuild the original valves. Reynolds Contempora
single horn valves are incredibly robust, and rarely show any signs of wear.
Tightening the bearings and lowering the bearing plate usually makes them good
as new. I found two on eBay, one for $12 and $25 shipping, the other for $1
and $20 shipping. My plan was to use five of the valves on the King, and
resell the valvectomy horns on eBay for $100 each. As soon as the first
arrived I redid the rotors and lined them up with new bumpers. What a pleasure
to work on such finely crafted parts. Compression is like new, and they work
like lightning. I took out the dents in about an hour, cle
aned everything, and took out a couple of very small leaks. When I played it,
I suddenly realized all the times we've debated between Bb and F singles, the
question of instrument quality has never been brought up. There is no way I
can part out this horn. I believe the Conn 4D, the old ones, is also a
professional level single. I loaned this horn to a young student, and his
parents and band director hear a major improvement over the school horn he's
been using. He's developing a beautiful F horn sound. It's a lot of horn for
a dollar.

Subject: [Hornlist] odd request

I was wondering if anyone had or knew where I could get a horn that has been
smashed flat? My husband and I (both amateur musicians) are redecorating and
think an old horn that's met the roller would make an interesting wall piece in
one of the rooms. Please contact me off-list if you know where I could get
something like this. Thanks!
