Is your printer connected directly to the computer? or are you going through a usb hub?

Not sure if that's the problem..trying to come up with some areas to check.

An update from Bob Smits regarding the installation of hplip-1.6.10-0.1.i586.rpm on a Suse 10.1 desktop with an HP 3300 MFP Printer/scanner.

I installed it from the rpm on sourceforge, and it appeared to install just fine. (Using Kpackage).

I still get exactly the same reaction - that is the printer works and is recognized, but the scanner doesn't do anything. I can select the printer driver as the scanner but the scanner never does anything.
Here are the outputs from lpstat and scanimage:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> lpstat -v
device for laserjet330033103320: usb://HP/LaserJet%203300/3310/3320
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/HP_LaserJet_3300_3310_3320?serial=00SGL1C10HF8' is a hp HP LaserJet 3300/3310/3320 multi-function peripheral
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> scanimage
scanimage: sane_start: Document feeder out of documents

I've also noticed a new driver over at sourceforge, http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149981&package_id=165777&release_id=456127

I followed the instructions to install it (sh./hplip-1.6.10.run) and I managed to get it installed.
I chose the following options during install:

Custom Install
Desktop install
Yes to see the release notes
No to Network/Jet Direct
Yes to GUI
No to PC Send Fax
Yes to scanning
No to Parallel IO
Yes to setting up a printer now
install to /usr
It took a very long time to print the test document but it looked very good.

The scanner still does not appear to work - when I open Kooka and choose the scanner, selecting preview mode does nothing when under 9.3 that would get the scan lamp to warm up and start taking the scan preview.
Here is the output from lpstat and scanimage
