I had the end user switch cables and put it in a different port. (It is at a
remote location)
Now I am getting this error when running tail -f /var/log/messages:

Of course the Office Jet device still works fine. Is the printer bad?

Have you tried a different USB cable?
also if possible try using a usb 1.1 hub and/or changing the speed of the
motherboard ports to 1.1.
And post the results.
